A Kairos Story: Kenneth

Hi, my name is Kenneth. I came with my whole family from the Philippines to Canada in 2009. By God's grace, I was able to find work in the field of plastic packaging that I was involved in for the past 30 years. I have many co-workers from the Philippines, and it’s always my desire to share the gospel with them and invite them to church. Years later, my brother Regan and a friend, Bernard, came to join the same company.
We had a vision to start a Bible study small group with them.
When we started to plan, we had a lot of excuses that resulted in delays.
- What Bible study material to use?
- We thought of using Alpha Course, but none of us have experience in leading.
- They will not be interested.
- They have no time.
- When and what time can we meet? They live too far etc.
By the end of 2020, one of our co-workers, who was undergoing a personal problem, asked, “When are we going to have the Bible study.?” The three of us were pleasantly surprised and we planned to start a Bible Study group in 2021.
Harry, a brother from our church, who just finished the Kairos course, told me that I should attend this course. Kairos changed many things that he viewed about the Great Commission.
The three of us attended the Kairos course together in January 2021. After we finished the course, we immediately started the Aquila Small Group in early March 2021. Our group is composed of co-workers, their spouses, friends, and church mates.
We have weekly discipleship/Bible studies through Zoom, and by halfway, three people in our group accepted the invitation to accept Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord. We invited them to our church. Our pastor, brothers, and sisters of the Newcomers Ministry welcomed them and made them feel at home.
Eventually, they attended the baptismal classes and were baptized in January 2022.
All of these are attributed to the leading of the Holy Spirit and the lessons from attending Kairos were put to good use.
Lessons from Kairos
Here are some of the Kairos lessons that were integrated in this ministry:
1. Ask God to show and work with us in our spheres of influence; be it our family, our workplace; our community etc.
2. Doing mission work is not limited to overseas, God has destined people from different parts of the world to our neighborhood, schools, and workplace.
3. Ask God to show us the intersection veins in our city. In our case, God showed us the migrant workers from the Philippines in the plastic manufacturing sector. Having the same language, cultural backgrounds, and interactions at the place of work help build the personal connections resulting in earning their friendships and trust.
4. Invite people in our church with the same vision to pray, to plan and do ministry. I thank God for Regan, Bernard and fellow church members who share the same vision and help us in doing this ministry.
5. God is in control of everything. A person’s decision to accept the Gospel is the work of the Holy Spirit and our role is to share the good news.
6. God’s will is clearly revealed in the Bible and He is totally committed to and actively involved in fulfilling His will.
We are humbled and thankful to God for allowing us to be involved in the World Christian movement journey. Please pray that our Aquila Small Group will be able to share the gospel to our friends and co-workers.
We pray that you too will soon experience this wonderful journey with God.
