Live Update from SM Global Conference, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Lorna Johnston /Wednesday, September 27, 2023

Delayed 3 years, it is with joy that we bring this update of the SM Global Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Our theme is ‘On Mission with God’.

Delegates have arrived from all over the world and settled into their accommodation. The planning and logistics teams have done their best to ensure that every possible detail has been attended to. There has been much prayer, and there is an expectation that God will meet with us here, to spur us on in the work of awakening the ‘sleeping giant’, the Global Church, into a life of purpose and alignment with God’s redemptive mission.

Some delegates arrived early to experience the TUSfY course (The Unfinished Story for Youth). The materials are being made available in early October and the North American team that participated are exploring options for launching first courses. This 5-session course is geared for participants from about age 12 or 13 and up. The best fit will be in church youth groups, led by youth leaders and pastors. It's part video, part small group discussion, part activities, part prayer and lots of fun, while tackling the serious question of God’s mission and our part in it.

The Canadian delegation gathered Wednesday morning for breakfast to meet each other and to share some of the conversations we’ve been having. There have been significant conversations about supporting the rollout of SM in Georgia (the country!), in Russian and Tamil in Canada, and among First Nation communities.

We’ve been enjoying powerful worship, encouraging devotional messages, amazing Global Region reports, stimulating workshops, challenging plenary sessions, inspiring testimonies, good food and wonderful fellowship. We wish all the Canadian SM family were here to enjoy this encouraging time with us!

Watch for more reports from our time together in the future, including news of a School for Mobilizers launch, global leadership transition in our movement, and summaries of some of the conference content.

Prayer Requests

In the meantime, please continue to pray for:

1.     All the delegates who are together, listening to God speak through the various sessions. Pray for a renewed passion and commitment to the ministry of mobilization, around the world, that the Church would be ignited to the privilege of joining God in his mission.

2.     Pray for each person who has a role in the conference—from presenters, to MC’s, to tech people, to translators… Pray that God would be anointing them for the work they are undertaking.

3.     Pray for online invisibility for those delegates who come from high-security contexts and are participating in this conference. Praise God they have been able to come. Pray that there are no issues as they return to their places of ministry.

4.     Pray for unity in the team from North America as we journey together, that we would feel the wind of the Holy Spirit blowing us along in the way we should go.

An Invitation to Pray: Week 6

An Invitation to Pray
WEEK SIX: The Calling and Empowering of the Holy Spirit

Join us in prayer from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday as we unite, focusing this week on the power of the Holy Spirit to impact and lead upcoming generations. As we recognize the importance of mobilizing our youth into God's mission, let's also lift up prayers for our Youth Mobilizers, so that they may be empowered, equipped, and provided for in their vital work.

WEEK FIVE: Unity of Mind and Purpose Born Out of Humility

In this fifth week of our prayer focus, we delve into the significance of praying for leaders and pastors to embody Jesus' vision of unity, fostering missional churches. Join us in praying for the Holy Spirit to empower mobilizers in their vital ministry.

WEEK FOUR: Prayer for Empowered Teams

During the sacred period between Easter and Pentecost, our prayer focus turns to teams trained and empowered by Jesus for their mission. This time commemorates the disciples' receiving of the Holy Spirit, igniting a fervent prayer for modern-day teams to be similarly equipped for their tasks. As believers unite in prayer, they seek the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to guide, strengthen, and boost these teams in their endeavours.

An Invitation to Pray: Week 3

An Invitation to Pray

In this time between Easter and Pentecost, let's embrace the strength of communal prayer. Just as the early followers assembled with one purpose, let's raise our voices in harmony, seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance and blessings. During this third week, let's lift up prayers for the mobilization efforts to flourish, seeking opportunities for collaboration and fruitful partnerships in reaching diverse communities across Canada.

An Invitation to Pray: Week 2

An Invitation to Pray

As we journey through the sacred season between Easter and Pentecost, let us come together, Christians united in faith, to embrace the power of collective prayer. In this second week of our initiative, let us deepen our commitment to intercede for our communities, nations, and the world at large. Let us not underestimate the impact of our collective supplications, for in unity, our prayers resonate with greater resonance before the throne of God. Join us in this sacred endeavor, as we strive to be vessels of love, peace, and healing in a world yearning for divine intervention.

An Invitation to Pray

Join the SM family in Canada in a Season of Prayer: Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday (March 31-May 19)

This Sunday we celebrate Easter, remembering the death, burial, and resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. On that Resurrection Day everything changed. But it wasn’t until the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came, that the power of that change was fully realized in the early disciples’ lives.

We need that same power to be at work in our efforts as the Simply Mobilizing family in Canada to awaken the church, the ‘sleeping giant’.  Our mobilization efforts shifted online during the pandemic, and much good has come from that. But the Canadian context and the Canadian church have changed. How shall we respond to these changes?

Nowruz Mobarak! Happy New Year!

Nowruz Mobarak! Happy New Year!

For many in the northern hemisphere, the first day of Spring (this year falling on March 19th) is a cause for hope and anticipation. Warmer weather, sunshine, and outdoor living is just around the corner.

But for people from places that have been influenced by Persian culture, such as Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Pakistan, Syria, Turkey, and the countries of Central Asia the spring equinox marks Nowruz, their New Years Day, and the start of thirteen days of celebration.

While the celebration of Nowruz varies between ethnic communities, it is an important celebration—including among the diaspora here in Canada. Perhaps even some of your neighbours are celebrating Nowruz?

Here are some ways to pray for those who are celebrating Nowruz
